Alabama doesn’t have a driver’s license office. It has a licensing agency. If you are current to the state of Alabama and go to a sub agency you first have to make sure you don’t gain the driver’s license office confused with any other licenses such as building permits or business licenses.
Next if you find the right sub agency they are going to send you to a bigger set. This is always fun when you are moving to a new station to be sent to offices that you don’t know where they are at. I must admit the lady gave me decent directions to find the main hub for driver licenses.
This is absolutely hysterical to me. The sub stations are only to renew your driver’s license. So why is there always a long line in those places? In this main station you had to wait an easy half hour. I judge I was in there for an hour and 15 minutes. The other thing about these places, there weren’t many children in there. People stood and clapped by the time I left. There is nothing to do with a child while you wait in these offices. At least mine wasn’t crying. I unfortunately don’t know anyone in the area and I am the only one that watches my children since I have been a mom. So of course my child went with me to wait, and wait.
The main hub is located at 3402 Demetropolis Rd, in Mobile Alabama. It’s relatively easy to get to as far as government offices go. The inside of the building is dirty. There isn’t even soap in the bathrooms. What public building doesn’t have soap in the bathrooms? If it was a little run down gas station, okay maybe they wouldn’t have soap.
When you first go in there is two people that sit beside the entrance and give you numbers for your turn. The sections are divided up so that the people taking the driving tests get one set of numbers, the people transferring licenses get a set of numbers and people reinstating their driver’s license gets a third set of numbers.
The offices are also broken up into three sections. They have a testing area that is enclosed in glass filled with desks. This is where the written exam takes place. There are also two windows for reinstatement of driver’s licenses and two windows for transferring licenses from out of spot. These two windows also have blue curtains so you can have your portray taken for your driver’s license.
You don’t actually receive your license while you are there. They give you a paper temporary license. Your regular driver’s license will get mailed to you in approximately two to six weeks.
The relate of you won’t turn out very pleasant. For some reason they never do on driver’s licenses. Just do what you can for the picture and it will be fine. The background is a medium shade of blue. Just in case you are trying to pick out outfits.
The transfer of your driver’s license from one state to another goes rather quickly especially if you are prepared.
THINGS TO BRING FOR A DRIVER’S LICENSE:
You need about $30 in cash. Mine cost $28 for a regular non-commercial license.
Driver’s license from previous state
Social Security Card
Recall a bill, lease agreement or signed contract from a home purchase to prove address if asked. I didn’t need to furnish a utility bill but my husband did. I guess it really depends on what clerk you get and what their mood is that day.
